Las macroalgas son abundantes y crecen fácilmente. Mientras que Yang estuvo en la Griffith University en Australia, él trabajó con colegas de de Qingdao University y Los Alamos National Laboratory en EEUU para elaborar nanofibras de carbono porosas del extracto de macroalga.

Las moléculas de alginato enlazan a iones metálicos como el cobalto, lo que resulta en nanofibras con una estructura de “caja de huevo”, con las unidades de alginato envolviendo los iones metálicos. Esta arquitectura es clave para la estabilidad de los materiales y la síntesis controlable, manifestó Yang.

Los ensayos mostraron que los materiales derivados de las macroalgas tienen una gran capacidad reversible de 625 miliamperio por gramo (mAhg-1), lo cual es considerablemente mayor que el 372 mAhg-1 de los tradicionales ánodos de grafito para las baterías de iones de litio. Esto podría ayudar a duplicar el rango de los carros eléctricos si el material del cátodo es de igual calidad.

Los científicos recibieron fondos del National Natural Science Foundation of China, el National High-Tech Research and Development Program of China y el Australian Research Council Discovery Project.
